September 10, 2006:  The USS Richard P. Leary held their annual business meeting at the Dulles Airport Hilton Hotel in Herndon VA. The meeting was presided over by Mr. Nicholas Hoyda, 2006 Reunion Chairman. Mr. Robert Blaker was selected as the 2007 Reunion Chairman. Following presentations by Mr. Hoyda and representatives from Military Reunions to Remember, the group elected to retain the services of MRTR for their next reunion. The group decided to hold their 2007 National Reunion in Norfolk, VA. The 2007 reunion is being tentatively planned for September, 2007.

September, 2006:  MRTR sent a leads request to both the Norfolk and Virginia Beach CVB's requesting proposals from appropriate hotels.

November 2, 2006:  MRTR sent a second leads request to both the Norfolk and Virginia Beach CVB's requesting proposals from appropriate hotels.

January 15, 2007: MRTR again requested proposals from the Norfolk CVB. After talking to several hotels we were informed that additional proposals were unlikely due to the size of the group.

March 7, 2007:  Most of the proposals are now in and at this time I do not expect any more. The following hotels have replied to our RFP (Request for Proposal):
Hotel Name Proposal Highlights
Sheraton Waterside, Downtown Norfolk

September

Proposal:  Group rate offered is $109.00 plus tax for block of 30 rooms per night.  Hospitality room provided complimentary. All meeting space room rental charges waived. Group rates available three days prior and three days after the reunion. Self parking is $12.00 per day, valet parking reduced to $12.00 per day for registered guests. Menu prices not addressed. No comp room for group chairman provided. Click here to go to the Hotel Web Site.

Comments:  Group rate is fair for the area, but the parking fees always bother us. We would suggest looking at this property. We may be able to get one comp night for the chairman, however this would be based on our making the guaranteed room pickup.

Crowne Plaza Hotel, Virginia Beach

September

Proposal:  Group rate offered is $109.00 plus tax for block of 30 rooms per night.  Hospitality room provided complimentary. Space for business meeting is $100.00 ++, rental fee for banquet negotiable based on food and beverage revenue. Parking is free. No comp room for chairman or MRTR staff. Click here to go to the Hotel Web Site.

Comments:  We would decline this property. Not knowing the actual cost of the banquet room and the rental fee for the business meeting would make it difficult to estimate the additional revenue required. due to room rate offered. As always, these fees might be negotiated down, but there are other options available so we would pass on this proposal.

Holiday Inn Executive Center, Virginia Beach.

September

Proposal:  Rate offered is $89.00 plus tax for block of 30 rooms. Hospitality room complimentary with a one time cleaning fee of $100.00. Business meeting space provided or can use hospitality room. Chairmans room provided Complimentary, Comp room for MRTR Services rep. Additionally one comp night for each 40 paid room nights. Rate can be adjusted to include breakfast (2 per room). Free parking and comp wine and cheese reception on first night of reunion. Comp Airport Shuttle. Comp podium and microphone for each group event. Group can bring in own soft drinks and dry snacks. Alcohol must be purchased from the hotel, beep charged at 15% over cost with buy back for unopened bottle beer. Click here to go to the Hotel Web Site.

Comments:  I have done several reunions at this hotel, particularly for groups who have never had a reunion. The Holiday Inn Executive Center has never held us to any attrition penalties regardless of the actual room pickup. This is definitely an older property, but it is well maintained and has a great staff. Their meal prices are very competitive and the food is better than most hotels. My guess is that banquet prices will run around $35.00 - $38.00 inclusive. Like every hotel in the Tidewater area, the Executive Center suffered some water damage due to leaks during Isabel. At my last event there I didn't notice any odors or obvious damage so I assume they have taken care of all associated problems. This would be our first recommendation for the 2007 reunion. .

Hilton Norfolk Airport, Norfolk.

September 19 - 23, 2007

Proposal:  Rate offered is $99.00 plus tax for block of 30 rooms. Hospitality room complimentary. Free parking for registered guests, comp microphone for all group events. Business meeting space not addressed. Comp room for MRTR Services rep. Comp Airport Shuttle. Click here to go to the Hotel Web Site.

Comments:  This is an excellent hotel, I suggest we site this property and get additional information.

Double Tree Hotel, Norfolk

September

Proposal:  Group rate offered is $92.00 plus tax for block of 30 rooms per night, available thee days prior and three days after the event.  Hospitality room provided complimentary. Parking is free, free airport shuttle. One comp night for chairman if group attains room block pickup. Group can bring in own soft drinks, dry snacks and alcohol without corkage charge. Click here to go to the Hotel Web Site.

Comments:  This is a good rate for the group. An advantage of this property is that it is attached to the Gallery at Military Circle Mall. The condition of the hotel is fair to good. Menu prices provided in proposal were very good. We would suggest you look at this property.

We have sent our bullet list of additional requirements to each of the indicated hotels.

It is time for the chairman to do a site inspection of each of the hotels he might want to look at. I will be contacting Mr. Blaker to try to arrange the appropriate meetings. Keep in mind that most of these properties have a substantial amount of corporate business so you want to give them time to plan for your visit.

The site inspection should also include a meeting with the tour company representative from Phlillips Tours. Email me at macs@visi.net and let me know which properties you would like for us to arrange a visit to.

April 10, 2007: Site inspections scheduled for April 18 and 19, 2007.
